Reports to:            Training Director

Oakes Children’s Center is a school-based mental health agency dedicated to providing education and mental health services to youth with emotional and/or developmental challenges and to their families, particularly in underserved communities. Our goal is to foster the social, emotional and educational growth necessary for children to continue learning and fully realize their potential.  We fulfill our mission by providing individualized education, innovative and culturally-responsive therapeutic services, comprehensive assessment, and clinical training.

Founded in 1963 by a group of parents who could not find a suitable placement for their children, Oakes now has expanded to four programs all aimed at reaching and providing access to excellent mental health services in a range of school settings - our Counseling Enriched Educational Program (or CEEP), our School-Based Partnership Program with SFUSD, our Outpatient Therapy Program, and finally our Clinical Training Program.

The Assistant Training Director position provides direct client services in the Partnership program. This program is a joint effort between Oakes and San Francisco Unified School District and allows children with emotional and behavioral issues to stay in a public school setting. Oakes’ mental health clinicians work with special education classrooms providing therapy and consultation. The clinicians provide therapeutic services in a range of settings and formats in the classroom and individually, and also offer collaborative consultation with the educational staff and parents.

Additionally, the Assistant Training Director will support the Clinical Training Director in the Training Program - a small, relationally-focused program dedicated to supporting the growth of doctoral psychology students, using psychodynamic, trauma-informed and evidence-based practices. This program recently received APA Accreditation. The trainees provide services in all of Oakes’ programs.

The 2018-19 school year cohort consists of one part-time practicum trainee and four full time interns. We plan to expand the practicum program next school year. Most of our clients are offered once to twice weekly non-directive play therapy during the school day, and the position provides a unique opportunity to supervise long-term, relational child therapy in a range of settings.

Oakes is a very supportive community, and we succeed because of our team-oriented approach and our commitment to our clients. We are seeking an energetic, collaborative psychologist, who is eager to have a direct impact on the growth of emerging clinicians and on the professional development of our entire staff to support the best possible care to our clients.
