Classroom Counselor

Oakes Children's Center, Inc. is a therapeutic-educational program for seriously emotionally disturbed children, ranging in age from 4 - 14 years.  Teaching teams work closely with parents and specialty therapists.  They create and maintain an environment in which children can develop and learn.  Parents are encouraged to participate in parent activities and therapy.

Oakes is certified by the California Department of Education as a non-public school and is part of San Francisco Community Health Services as a day treatment facility.

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to fifty pounds, walk up stairs, run, and move about with ease
  • Successful completion and certification of Pro-ACT training to be provided by Oakes at next available training.


  • B.A. or B.S. in Special Education, Psychology, Social Work, or Education preferred.
  • HS Diploma/GED required
  • Experience working with children.

FTE:  1.0, 40 hrs/wk., non-exempt

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Classroom Counselor works as an integral member of a three or four-person team.  He/she participates fully in all staff development and training activities.  Under the leadership of the headteacher, the Classroom Counselor participates in planning, preparation, and evaluation of the program.  Finally, the Classroom Counselor is required to communicate, orally and in writing, information, observations, and experiences with individual children or groups of children to promote close coordination of the program and the fullest possible development of the children.  A classroom will generally range in size from 5-8 children.



  • Help create a physical and emotional environment which meets the educational and therapeutic needs/goals of individuals and the group.  To provide activities and experiences for individual children and for groups consistent with individual and classroom goals.
  • Assist in planning and conducting a regularly scheduled group activity such as art, science or social studies.  To help plan and provide individual tutoring to assigned children, consistent with the group and individual plans.
  • Identify (with direction from the Head Teacher) supplies and equipment needed for assigned activities and lessons and help prepare monthly orders.  To purchase supplies when they cannot be ordered from Oakes’ suppliers and to submit expense records with receipts.
  • Plan and direct lunch and recess activities.  To structure and direct periods when children select their own activities.
  • Participate in preparation and writing of various reports:  beginning and end of year assessments; parent-staff goals; daily progress notes; prescriptive plans; incident reports; quarterly reports for SFUSD; end-of-year reports.  To complete each by the due date as posted by Educational or Clinical Coordinator.
  • Ride the school bus to and/or from school with the children as needed; approximately 3-4 trips per week.
  • Clean and prepare the classroom daily (e.g. preparing breakfast, doing dishes, making photocopies, preparing materials, filing, grading work, etc.).
  • Closely supervise students through implementation of Oakes’ Positive Behavior System, individual Behavior Plans, IEP goals, etc., particularly when the Head Teacher is engaged in a lesson.  This may include supporting students outside the classroom and assisting in a crisis.  Implementing the PBS system and leading during a crisis requires the ability to make decisions quickly, and to follow through on these.
  • Increase understanding of the therapeutic and educational processes. 
  • Improving skills and techniques for working with the children and their families. 
  • Knowing and understand the goals of each child in the group and the plans for achieving them.
  • Be able to read the medical charts and educational records of each child in the group within the first month of employment and at least annually thereafter.
  • Participating in all staff development activities provided by Oakes, including team meetings with clinicians, Educational Coordinator, Executive Director, consultations with the medical director, and in-service training provided by Educational Coordinator, head teachers, and outside consultants.
  • Establishing and maintain a relationship with parents which supports the children in achieving their goals.
  • Participating with team members in individual and/or group conferences at Oakes with parents.
  • Participating in parent programs as applicable for parents of your group (Parent Pot Luck, school assemblies, etc.).
  • Communicating in writing and personally as needed and/or assigned to ensure integration of each child and the class into the overall operations of Oakes Children's Center.
  • Collaborating daily with team members to ensure full exchange of information regarding each child's progress and needs.  To coordinate daily and weekly planning to promote the full development of each child.
  • Prepare, with other team members, a summary of each child's progress for inclusion in medical charts and education records at the time of termination or at end of the year.      
  • Keeping records and document behavior as assigned by Head Teacher, Behavior Analyst, Clinical Coordinator and/or Educational Coordinator.

 Other responsibilities:  

  •   To follow procedures as set forth in the staff manual.  To pay particular attention to emergency and safety procedures.
  • Also, perform rotating duties as scheduled.
  • Perform other duties such as communicating mutual concerns with outside

            agencies (i.e. bus, recreational programs), cleaning up after children in crisis.
