School Van Driver

Oakes Children’s Center, Inc. is a therapeutic-educational program for seriously emotionally disturbed children, ranging in age from 5-14 years.  Teaching teams work closely with parents and specialty therapists.  They create and maintain an environment in which children can develop and learn.  Parents are encouraged to participate in parent activities and therapy.

Oakes is certified by the State Department of Education as a non-public school and is part of San Francisco Community Health Services as a day treatment facility.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team-oriented staff
  • Planning and organizing skills
  • Experience with children, preferably with special needs and/or emotional and behavioral disturbance
  • Experience transporting passengers in vans/buses
  • Knowledge of traffic and highway rules and regulations
  • Successful completion and certification of Pro-ACT training to be provided by Oakes at next available training.
  • CA driver’s license
  • Clean driving record as defined below – DMV printout
  • License must be from the state of residence.
  • No license suspensions or revocations within the past 2 years.
  • No major violations within last 4 years (drunk or reckless driving)
  • No more than one major violation between 3 and 7 years old and any other incident (violation or accident) in the last three years
  • No more than 1 chargeable accident within the last year; or 2 or more chargeable accidents in the past 3 -years
  • No more than 3 minor moving violations in the last three years.  No more then 4 non-moving violations.
  • Drivers with less than 5 years driving experience (exceptions can be made)

 

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma required
  • BA or AA preferred

 

HOURS:  As needed, approximately 20 hours per week.  This is a split schedule that works morning and afternoon hours with unpaid scheduled time off in between.

 

RESPONSIBLE TO:  Transportation Coordinator

 

MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY*:

 

The driver works as a member of the transportation team, with the bus aides as well as education staff during drop-offs and pick-ups.  The driver is responsible for the overall functioning and safety of their route.  Drivers will provide transportation on their regular daily routes (morning and afternoon), as well as periodical routes as assigned (field trips, etc.).

 

DRIVING:

●  Drive the daily routes before and after school, following the set schedule and times.  Adjust route if needed.  Drive other routes (field trips, etc.) as assigned periodically.

●  Comply with all traffic and highway rules and regulations.  Follow emergency procedures and directions.  Maintain defensive driving techniques.  Drive in a comfortable manner.

●  Follow safety procedures for loading and unloading passengers.

●  Create a positive and comfortable environment for all passengers.  Ensure passenger’s physical comfort (temperature, space, etc.), maintain appropriate noise level (conversation, music), ensure appropriate topics and language for conversations or music.

●  Maintain order and safety, assist passengers as needed.

 

MAINTENANCE:

●  Perform a walk through before and after every route.  Clean internal cabin as needed.  Notify supervisor of repairs to internal cabin as needed.

●  Notify supervisor of any mechanical related issues as they arise.

●  Maintain supplies on your vehicle.  Ensure that GPS and cell phone are charged and working.  Ensure that 1st aid kit and other emergency supplies are stocked.

 

ADMINISTRATION AND COMMUNICATION

●  Communicate with the children and their families regarding schedules, pick-ups/drop-offs, changes, safety issues.

●  Communicate with co-workers on your vehicle and at Oakes Children's Center regarding any changes or safety issues.

●  Inform supervisor of any issues involving your vehicle or your route.  This includes issues with children, their family, or co-workers; changes to the daily route; any needed maintenance or repairs; issues regarding supplies on the vehicle; any other relevant issues that may arise.

●  Follow and promote all agency policies and procedures.

●  Perform agency paperwork as assigned.

●  Attend meetings and trainings as assigned.
