PE Lead / Classroom Counselor

Oakes Children’s Center, Inc. is a therapeutic-educational program for seriously emotionally disturbed children, ranging in age from 5 – 14 years.  We have 4 classrooms, with 4 – 7 students per classroom.  Oakes is certified by the State Department of Education as a non-public school (NPS) and is part of San Francisco Community Health Services as a Counseling Enriched Education Program (CEEP).

We are looking for an individual to lead PE instruction daily for each of our 4 classrooms.  Additional classroom staff will support and participate during PE class.  This individual will also support with students inside each of the classrooms throughout the day while PE Class is not occurring, and ride our agency vans with students several days a week before or after school.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team-oriented teaching staff.

Planning and organizing skills.

Experience with children with special needs and/or emotional and behavioral disturbance.

Experience leading group physical activities

Successful completion and certification of Pro-ACT training to be provided by Oakes at next available training.

 

EDUCATION:

High school diploma required

BA or AA preferred

A.P.E. Accreditation preferred

 

START DATE:  August 14, 2017

HOURS:

The typical schedule is Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 4:00 pm.  Some days the schedule might be 7:15 – 3:15 in order to support students while they are being transported to school on our agency vans.  The school day is 8:30 am to 2:00 pm.

MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

PE Instructor:

The PE Instructor works as a member of the educational team, leading each classroom in daily PE activities.

●  Create and update Daily Lesson Plans, in accordance with US and CA DOE regulations.  Submit completed Lesson Plans to Program Coordinator.

●  Complete all US and CA DOE mandated PE testing, as assigned.

●  Maintain an adequate level of PE and recess supplies.

●  Develop a varied yearly PE curriculum.  Instruct each classroom in daily PE class.

 

Classroom Counselor Support:

While not preparing for or leading PE classes, will work as a Classroom Counselor with each of the four teaching teams and in each of the four classrooms.

● While in the classroom, under the direction of the head teacher, s/he will tutor    the students, participate in behavior management and the maintenance of the   classroom structure.

● Utilize the Positive Behavior System when interacting with students.  As necessary, provide behavioral interventions including physical restraint when appropriate.

● Follow the daily schedule as determined based on the needs of each classroom.

● Ride morning or afternoon vans as scheduled to support the students.

● Complete daily Avatar notes, Incident Reports, student points sheets, and other documentation as required.

 

General Duties:

The PE Lead / Classroom Counselor will complete all duties as assigned.

●  Communicate pertinent information to the appropriate staff or supervisor (e.g. discipline, incidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.).

●  Attend staff meetings and trainings.
